MINT JULEPS UNDER THE MAGNOLIAS

submitted by: Michael Webb

One of the most beloved romantic movies of all times is “Gone with the Wind.” The southern charm, the beautiful plantations and the thought of being pampered is indeed romantic in the minds of many.

In the southwestern corner of Georgia there is a little known concentration of 75 plantations that are still occupied, around the small town of Thomasville. Many of the nations wealthiest families maintain these estates as private residences or winter retreats.

A few years ago one of these homes was transformed into a secluded country resort. With peacocks strutting around the grounds, horse and carriage rides available before the gourmet evening meal and a veranda overlooking the stately magnolia trees, indeed this is a romantic getaway.

You can spend your entire weekend relaxing at Melhana Plantation or the great staff there can assist in making arrangements if you want to go horseback riding, get a massage or take a leisurely bicycle ride through town.

Just a couple of miles down the road is the well known, Pebble House Plantation. While the large home is worth a tour, we found the stables to be even more impressive.
