Early in 2005 I set a goal to have 100,000 subscribers to this
newsletter by the end of the year.  Well, I got up to 90,000 which
is pretty close.

What kind of goals have you set for your relationship?  How about:
no fighting, more time together, going back to church, saving enough
for a house, getting out of debt or some other worthwhile goal?  If
you don’t set a goal, chances are you will never reach it.

The Big Assist

We had no money and our usual party friends were away on holidays so
we decided to stay home this particular New Year’s Eve and share our
time together.  We had planned to sit outside in the backyard and
catch glimpses of the fireworks as they were set off at the local
park.  As we sat chatting we decided to write out the goals we
individually wanted to achieve by the end of the new year.

Then we swapped our notes and added what we would do to help support
each other in reaching each goal.

For example He wanted to quit smoking so I wrote that I would
support him by giving him daily positive feedback, and ‘special’
romantic incentives each week if he stuck to his new non-smelly
habit.

I wanted to lose weight so he stopped bringing snacks home and
offered me ‘special’ romantic incentives (for added exercise he
said!) each week if I stuck to my new habits.
