BETTER THAN HINTING
by Cristen Hammel
http://theromantic.com/
My husband and I were married in October 1998. I bought him a watch
and he bought me earrings. On our wedding night we exchanged our
gifts.
We both were excited that we thought of one another but both quickly
asked “Did you save the receipt?” The diamond earrings were pretty
but believe it or not they were too big for my ears. They were
overpowering against my earlobes. The watch was something he needed
but he didnt care for a gold face or links.
So we returned our gifts for each other and picked out something we
wanted. We (actually my husband) thought of an idea to prevent this
from happening in the future and to ensure that we purchased things
that the other person likes as well as needs.
We went shopping for wrapping paper and then we took two separate shoe
boxes and wrapped them. The idea was to put information on things
that we would like as presents into our box.
We could either write it down on a piece of paper or cut it out of a
magazine or advertisement. We would then attach a full description of
the item, approximate cost, size if applicable and where it could be
purchased.
We also had a NO list. This was a list of things we do not need,
anything you had enough of or simply did not want. We also had a list
of safe things to buy (favorite perfume, favorite authors, cooking,
gardening, etc.)
My husband went all out. Not only was there a picture of the item,
but he included the maximum amount I should pay, the stores I would
most likely find it in and a map on how to get to the stores or where
the store was located in the mall.
Be sure to periodically go through your box, you will be surprised at
how much stuff you no longer want after a period of time — and make
sure you let your mate know you are removing the item from the box so
you dont end up getting the Taco Bell Chihuahua that you thought was
so cute a few years ago.
