Sowing the Seeds of Love

Four years ago, after purchasing my first home, I began receiving
anonymous love offerings mailed in plain white envelopes.

Each week, to my delight, I would stumble across one of these gifts
sandwiched between a slew of bills, each containing a single packet of
garden seeds.  That first winter I was too engrossed in painting and
staining the interior to consider the black earth that lay sleeping
outside my back door.

Even after the snow melted, and spring had nearly slipped by, my only
thought was to find a neighborhood boy to mow the lawn.

Occasionally I would spread out the colorful packets: Glossy pictures
of sugar beets and nasturtiums, dill and baby cukes would spill forth
like a mosaic, and I would contemplate the mystery of such a strange
and wonderful gift.

Then one afternoon in late May, my boyfriend appeared at the door
clutching a pair of garden gloves and a white envelope.  As I opened
the all-too-familiar wrappings, out fell a packet of seeds —
forget-me-nots.

That summer was the beginning of two romances that have continued to
grow.  I am thankful to my mystery mailer, who is now my husband and
gardening partner, for showing me a side of life from which I have
reaped many rewards.
