This summer, my boyfriend and I lived about 40 miles apart in different towns. Sometimes he would surprise me by waiting for me in the parking lot when I got off of work. He did this so often that I started to expect it and look for him when I knew he would be coming down to see me.
One night I was late getting out of work, and when I didn’t see him in the parking lot, I was flustered and disappointed. When I came to the door of my apartment, I was in for a big surprise. My roommate and a friend were sitting in the living room watching TV, but the floor from the door down the hall was strewn with red and white rose petals.
I asked them what was going on but they both played dumb. I followed the path down the hall to my bedroom where my boyfriend was lying on my bed, also strewn with petals, holding half a dozen red roses for me.
It’s not an unusual tactic to leave a trail for one’s partner, but the fact that he did it to shake up our routine, and that he was unashamed to do it in front of my roommate and her friend, meant more to me than all the roses in the world. It showed me that he really cared, and didn’t care who knew it.
