Romance is a way of life for my (now) husband and I. As some find the idea of elaborate displays of affection a waste of time and childish, to us, it’s a way of showing each other that no matter what is going on in our world, we will make time to show our gratitude and appreciation of each other known in this lifetime. It should come as no surprise that Valentine’s Day is yet another occasion for us to demonstrate this affection to one another.
One particular year, searching through chain greeting card stores, I could not find one Valentine that could sum up all that my then fiancé, Tom meant to me. I wanted to take bits and pieces from each of the cards to make the “perfect” Valentine statement for him since writing poetry is not my specialty. Instead, I purchased 10 of the cards I felt were most meaningful and relevant to our relationship and also bought a package of number stickers from the craft store. On my home computer, I used clear address labels and printed in a script font a different reason for why I love Tom as much as I do. I numbered the front of each envelope with a coordinating number sticker from 1 – 10 and put the “reason I love you” label under the number. I tried to correspond each reason to the card inside. I then took the ten cards and hid them in places throughout the day – in numerical order – in obvious places he could find them (the bathroom mirror, the seat of the car, his pillow, etc…) Not only did he love reading the countdown to why I love him, but he enjoyed the surprise of finding each one all day long and reading the card and message from me within.
