For our 1st wedding anniversary I bought my husband a clock, because he’d seen one that he loved (and he loves clocks!) and because it’s the traditional 1-year gift. However, I kept feeling like I wanted to present him with a more sentimental and heart-felt gift.
I thought about it and prayed about it, and finally decided to create a book of art and poetry. I purchased a small (5 x 5) spiral-bound sketch/scrapbook. I had found 2 love poems on TheRomantic.com that I particularly liked, so I printed those to use.
Then, I came across a book of love poetry that my husband purchased before we started courting. I browsed through it, selecting poems that held special significance to us, or poems that seemed descriptive of our relationship. I wrote these poems on alternating pages (leaving blank pages in between each poem), in my own handwriting.
At the end of the book, I wrote my own love poem for my husband, recounting my feelings at the end of one year of marriage. On the blank pages, I drew with sketching pencils and watercolor pencils.
I drew sketches from our first date, our early courtship, our engagement, and special times from our first year of marriage. I even drew sketches to represent our special dates on the anniversary of our wedding (we had each planned a special date).
After my husband and I read the poetry book together, my husband turned to me with tears in his eyes and said, “That’s the best gift you’ve ever given me.” I have some skill as an artist, but even if I hadn’t, the book would have been just as appealing to him with stick-figures. It was the art of my heart that mattered to him.
