Initially I put a 1×1 teaser ad in the classifieds of the newspaper and made sure my intended saw it. The ad was worded as a clue, but with no signature.
When the intended figured out what the clue meant, he followed it to the next clue. I had about four different clues with the last one leading to some mutual friends. The friends blindfolded my date, drove around enough to get him lost, and then deposited him at my doorstep where I had an elegant table set with a crazy meal which included a giant homemade hamburger which we shared.
The clues he received covered a four-day span before the actual date. It was a blast because he was trying to figure out if it was me or someone else and he shared his curiosity with me. By the time we had our date it was really fun. I almost hated to see the clues end. His curiosity was eating him up!
