While Julie and I were dating during undergraduate school in Hillsdale, Michigan, she worked at a small law firm in town to help her prepare for law school. On our six month anniversary, I decided to take her to Detroit to have a home-cooked meal prepared by some friends of ours and then to see the Broadway performance of Beauty and the Beast.
She was scheduled to work that day, so in order to keep our plans a surprise for her, I told her that I would pick her up after work and we would go to the nearby town of Jackson for dinner and a movie. What she didn’t realize was that I had already asked her boss if she could have the day off. He not only agreed, but wrote her a note telling her to have a fun time and that he would see her the next day.
I then asked one of her co-workers to call her at home and tell her that an important client was coming in and that she needed to dress especially nice; in fact, she should probably wear one of her nicest dresses. She was a bit perplexed by this, but complied. I then went down to campus and picked her up to “take her to work”. I asked her to take something out of the glove box and read it to me, which was, of course, the note from her boss. We shared a wonderful evening, enjoying the company of our friends and, more importantly, the company of each other.
