On Birthdays

PUBLIC, YET PRIVATE

private public birthday celebrationWhen my husband turned 50 I knew I had to commemorate the occasion but also realized he would not want a big party. So a month in advance I contacted everyone I could think of — his friends, relatives, former teachers, neighbors, etc. and asked them to all send a birthday card. I received well over 100 cards.

I packaged them up in a huge box, wrapped it, stuck a big bow on it, and presented it to him at the restaurant I had hired a stretch limo to take us to on the night of his birthday. We spent two hours at the restaurant opening the cards, laughing, and having the time of our lives. He was very surprised and pleased that although all his friends had been involved in this, the occasion was able to be celebrated by just the two of us at an intimate dinner.
