MARKING UP BOOKS

submitted by: Robert Coombs

I work in residence life at a major university.  One of the things that I spend a great deal of time doing is recognizing people for their work, and one way we do that is by making creative gifts for people.

Recently, when my partner was going through a very difficult time, I made her a bookmark that said some of the things I love about her.  Things like “If you only knew how many people you touch everyday…” and “Your passion is evident in your success.”  I slipped it into the book she was reading at the time, and waited for her to find it.

Knowing that she reads as an escape from the problems of everyday life, I was confident that I would help her to see the brighter side of her work.  When she did find it, it was worth every letter I wrote just to see her reaction.
