Our first date was certainly unique as it happened on a Thanksgiving evening. My date picked me up from my mom’s house and took me down to the Plaza Lighting Ceremony. It is quite well known in the mid-west. It happens on the Country Club Plaza where all the buildings are lit up.
There is live music, entertainment, and a child is chosen from the audience to assist the celebrity host to throw the switch to turn on the hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights all at the same time, all over the area. It was very romantic even though we were surrounded by thousands of other people.
After we left there we went back to my place and talked into the wee hours of the morning. I knew when he left (and he didn’t even try to kiss me) that he was the man I wanted to marry.
What makes this location and this date so special is that one year later, we again attended the lighting ceremony. However, this time when the countdown started to turn on the lights, he stepped back from me and loosened his hold from around my waist. I turned around to see what was going on just in time to see him go down on one knee with a ring in his hand. I honestly do not think I allowed him the opportunity to say anything; I sure didn’t hear him if he did….I just said YES! YES! YES! It was such a special moment, that we shared with thousands of others in Kansas City on that Thanksgiving night.
We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary next month!
