ON GUARD

I was talking to my boyfriends mother one day and she whipped out the baby book of so many years ago.  The tape was yellowed and the pages were coming out but the cutest things kept falling onto the counter. I picked up a toothpick with the colored foil on the end used to pick up cheeses and the like at events.

With a confused look on my face, i looked up at my love’s mom, who smiled.  My sweetheart was sitting right next to me blushing as she told me that when he was little, he used to think they were swords and always saved them when he found them.  I let it go for the moment after smiling at my guy but soon after we had gone out to dinner and on my plate was one of those toothpicks.  I smiled joyfully at the sight, picked it up, and handed it to my boyfriend across the table. He laughed, and knowing that i was semi-teasing him, said that he was going to send it away to be engraved with my name and the date since me giving that to him meant soooo much.  He carefully wiped it off and set it aside, a grin on his face the whole time.

Nevertheless, each time I get a toothpick with colored foil on the end I seek out my love, and give it to him immediately so that he can “send it away to be engraved”, even though we now live over a thousand miles apart.
