When I was out of state in graduate school for a year, I highlighted Valentine’s Day with a special mailing. I put together a collection of slow songs that had meant something to my future wife and I while we were in college. In the midst of some of the songs I recorded my letter to her on audio tape, telling the story of where we first heard or danced to certain songs, and how it made me feel close to her to listen to those songs again. I also rigged my recorder to allow me to duet with one of the songs, which really pleasantly surprised her to be serenaded from so far away. She still treasures that tape nine years later as one of the more romantic things I have done.
